Artist and Writer

Claudia Isabel Navas

Claudia Isabel Navas was born in Colombia of a father who was a Historian and a mother who was a Sociologist. Her father's research in European archives led the Navas-Aparicio family to the research field in Europe. In the midst of her family's itinerant and atypical background, Claudia Isabel has built a multicultural and borderless homeland, while being nourished by the ideals of both her parents.

Thus, she left home at the age of 19 with a scholarship to pursue art training at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. No sooner had she arrived in the United States of America than she was victim of a car accident in which she almost lost her life and which cost her the temporary mobility of her lower limbs. Claudia Isabel began physical rehabilitation to learn again how to walk. Returning to school in Chicago, where she was enrolled in the Painting and Video/Performance Departments, she received honors such as The Leadership Award and 100% Dean's Grant funded studies, among other scholarships. After graduating at the age of 23, she wrote her first documentary project. Inspired by Chicago's Jazz and Blues culture, she wanted to visit the country where she was born, returning to a village with African roots in the Colombian Pacific Basin to study, with Anthropologists, the music and ancestral traditions of these rural and mining communities. In 1998, his project was selected by the City of Chicago and subsequently received funding from the U.S. Endowment for the Humanities, the Illinois Humanities Council, and the Center for Black Music Research, among others.

Claudia Isabel moved to France in 2002. She continued her career and studies in Paris by obtaining a degree in art history at the Ecole du Louvre and in Museology of Science at the Museum national d’Histoire naturelle. In 2007, and together with Andrés Gleixner and Christian McManus, two Franco-Chilean Artists, Claudia Isabel decided to create the Association Liens artistiques / Enlaces Artísticos which goal is to welcome artists and creators from the American continent to France. The Association has been in charge of various cultural, artistic and scientific projects of international large-scale. Among the institutions that have mandated the association Enlaces Artísticos to carry out cultural projects, we can mention UNESCO, La Maison de l’’Amérique latine, the Historical Center of Valmy, the Museum national d’Histoire naturelle, el Jardín Botánico de Medellín, Tudor Place in Washington DC, the Hôtel de Ville of Paris, the Bibliothèque de l’Institut de France with the help of the académies of Fine Arts and that of Sciences, the Embassies of France, Colombia or Germany when the projects were carried out abroad. Today, after 13 years of management and production of transdisciplinary and multifaceted projects, and following the loss of her mother, Claudia Isabel, has created her own brand “Cultura Orquídea” which is an achievement that converges all the professional experiences acquired during his life. Motivated by the various transmissions received within her family during her early childhood and those applied by the Enlaces Artísticos association, Claudia Isabel, today wishes to open a place of welcome in which all these values can emerge by allocating spaces for creators and artists as well as for practitioners of well-being techniques. Today, she is in the process of concluding her doctoral thesis at the University of Cologne on the history of Latin America in the Age of Enlightenment.

Her works have been published by the Library of the Institut de France, Anne Rideau Editions and the Association Enlaces Artisticos.
