Botanist

Julio Augusto Henriques

Julio Augusto Henriques was a Portuguese botanist, professor at the University of Coimbra and director of its botanical garden. Born into a family who wanted him to become a lawyer, he first studied law, graduating in 1859. However, dissatisfied with this career, he reoriented himself towards the sciences and obtained a degree in philosophy, followed by a PhD on the question "Are species mutative?". In 1866, he became a tutor at Coimbra's Faculty of Philosophy, where he taught botany, agriculture, zoology, chemistry and mineralogy.

In 1873, he was appointed head of botany, agriculture and the botanical garden, where he set about reforming the department along the lines of model institutions in Europe. Passionate about teaching, he developed laboratory resources and fieldwork opportunities for his students, as well as a herbarium and library. He acquired the herbarium of Moritz Willkomm, a German collector, making Coimbra a base for the study of Portuguese flora.

He also studied the flora of the Portuguese colonies in Africa, notably São Tomé and Príncipe, where he published the first flora of these islands and instructions for agricultural cultivation.

En 1907, l'Université d'Uppsala lui a décerné un doctorat honorifique. Cependant, Henriques a préféré se concentrer sur l'enseignement et la gestion des jardins plutôt que sur les positions administratives.
